The luxury of paying less on accommodation and spending more on fun, while on holidays in western Crete. Conveniently located on the edge of the historical seaside village of Maleme, Summer Lodge, an attractive, family run vacation lodging is a fine example of traditional Greek architecture. Only 5 Kms from the centre of Platanias and 16 Kms west of Hania town, is the ideal starting point for the visitors requiring a wide variety of sandy beaches, water sport activities, peaceful countryside walks, or interesting visits in archaeological and historical sites. With the tremendous advantage of being no more than 400 meters by footpath to the long, quiet beach of Maleme, mostly sandy but also pebbly and a number of local restaurants as well as a supermarket and other shops, the situation couldn't be more convenient and car hire, although useful is not essential, since bus service is frequent. Set around a pretty, flower filled courtyard and orange grove, our pleasantly light, well kept guesthouse has 15 furnished and nicely decorated bedrooms. They all have en suite shower rooms, wc and wash hand basin and are equipped with fridge, and safety deposit box. Accommodation is available in single, double, twin or triple bedded rooms to meet all requirements, with maid service and linen/towel change provided twice a week. Most of the rooms have shared balconies or open terraces whilst others on the ground floor, that face onto the gardens, have a patio area and plenty of outdoor space in which to relax in. The simple, traditional interiors are cool and a wall fitted fan in each bedroom adds an extra degree of comfort during the warm summer days. The superb 10m x 5m pool is surrounded by sun terraces and is supplied with patio furniture and sun lounges. Beyond the pool and shaded by trees and a pergola is a pretty terrace with free Internet Wi-Fi connection, where breakfast is served any time you please at the additional charge of 4 €/person and a small bar serving cool drinks in the hot summer evenings. Niriis is a small family hotel, located 30m away from the beach, in Agii Apostoli area, 4km west of Chania. There are 3 busses every 15-30 minutes, takes 15 minutes to town. There is a taxi rank and bus stop 30m away. Within one minute walk (30m), there are three beaches, swimming pools, mini markets, restaurants, park, hotel bars, bus stop, taxi rank and a communal car parking. Niriis Hotel has 24 rooms. Every apartment is equipped with a kitchenette (fridge, two cooking hobs and cooking utensils), en-suite shower and toilet, free internet, TV, air-conditioning (extra charge, individual electronic meters, 1 euro per Kilowat), safety box, phone (extra charge), single beds, wardrobe, kitchen table and chairs. Most apartments have two beds, but there are three-bed apartments, and a few three and two four-bed apartments with two separate rooms. Air-conditioning and telephone is available at a separate charge. Included in the price is a 15-30 minute presentation (depending on stay) for all guests, on where to go and what to see. The 3 main things to visit in Chania is Samaria gorge, Elafonisi and Balos/Gramvousa beaches. Although Niriis Hotel has no swimming pool, residents can use the swimming pools of nearby hotels, in particular the one at Cretan Dream (we have special agreement). There is also no restaurant or bar in the hotel, but there is plenty of choice within the area.

The entrance of the original Venetian doorway, with the iron emblem of the Turkish symbol over the head, hints at the history behind this extraordinary hotel, a stronghold during the Turkish occupation in the early 19th century. The original features depict its history, such as the iron barred windows and wooden barrier behind the front door - of such thickness it would be impossible to remove without breaking the walls down; a fair deterrent against unwelcome visitors during more turbulent times on the island and a stark contrast to the warm welcome extended to guests today! Once inside, the picture changes to the warm, cosy parlour of the breakfast area, bar and reception. Stonewalls, arches and the original fireplace in the corner are a reminder of the former elegance of this Venetian mansion. The décor is very reminiscent of its historical past and the theme is "Eastern Chic" - neo classical furnishings with lots of granite, iron, wood and bold fabrics made from luxurious silks, decadently embroidered drapes and Turkish carpets; a real Aladdin’s cave. The attention to detail is exquisite and in perfect keeping with roots of the original building and area. Furnishings are opulent, contemporary and comfortable, and though the general ambience is of years gone by, the facilities most certainly belong to the future; all rooms are fitted with the latest technology with Satellite TV and a highly sophisticated telephone system with The style continues throughout the hotel and the eight individually styled rooms and suites have elegant furnishings throughout, many with romantic four-poster beds, a rich array of luxurious fabrics and up to the minute features and facilities. In the summer, breakfast is served in the private little courtyard at the back of the hotel, as are drinks and snacks in the evening. The bougainvillea covered stone walls surround this and the old Turkish well, one of only three left in Chania, providing a haven of tranquillity from the city; the only sound coming from the bells of the nearby Agia Aikaterinou with its minaret towering above. There is also a little west facing roof-terrace where drinks may be taken, perfect for watching the sun go down over the minarets, spires and red tiled rooftops of intriguing and historical Chania!
